Enes Kanter Freedom has been making waves in the world of women's basketball recently after declaring himself eligible for the next WNBA draft. In a clear protest against trans participation in the league, both Freedom and fellow retired basketballer Royce White announced their eligibility this month.
Since then, Polymarket has offered a market on Freedom actually being drafted into the WNBA. The Yes price was as high as 31% when Freedom made his initial announcement, but it soon descended to around 7%. More recently, it sank to 2% on Monday night a few hours after Freedom mocked WNBA star Angel Reese, comparing her to the NBA's Paul George and managing to insult both in the process.
Now though, Polymarket has archived the market. When contacted by PredictCentr as to why, given the market has not settled as per the site's rules, Polymarket remained tight-lipped on the reasoning. Instead, the prediction market site explained what happens when a market is archived.
“The outcome is processed automatically if the market stays archived”
"One of three things happens: refunds to all positions, a 50-50 resolution, the market reopens later," Polymarket explained. "No action is required from users. The outcome is processed automatically if the market stays archived."
Notably, there have been no fresh developments in the Freedom story since the market was archived. In the latest news, a WNBA task force met on August 13 to discuss the eligibility rules for trans participants but did not arrive on a determination. Instead, they said they "strongly denounce the bad-faith efforts to use these topics to demean and marginalize others."
The next WNBA draft is in April. As per Polymarket's own rules on the Freedom market, it was supposed to resolve Yes if he was drafted, otherwise it would resolve No. If the draft was postponed then it resolved No. Resolution sources could be official WNBA announcements or a consensus of credible reporting.
